Dear friends
In today’s blog I would like to tell you about the success of the ASSEGAIA Conference.
Below you will find the last newsletter of the LE CIEL FOUNDATION about the SACRED SITES AND ARCHITECTURE group (One Ancient Future):
Global Conference Creates Groundbreaking Declaration to Protect Sacred Natural Sites
One Ancient Future recently returned from South Africa after successfully completing one of its 2019 projects, The ASSEGAIA Conference for the Declaration of Sacred Sites. The international conference convened a delegation of 26 experts from 8 countries to establish a new paradigm for protecting sacred natural sites.
Organised in partnership with The Global White Lion Protection Trust, Le Ciel Foundation, and EVOL Foundation, the gathering is part of a growing global movement to recognise the sovereignty of Nature and to honour customary laws in environmental and sacred sites protection. Delegates included Indigenous leaders, scientists, conservationists, environmental lawyers, spiritual guardians, human rights experts, and global NGOs. One Ancient Future members Bianca Borghetti, Rico Paganini, and Jennifer Houston were joined by Lucy Martens of Le Ciel, Tricia Eastman from Group 1 (New Energies), Rachel Kearl (2019 Holistic Visions Ambassador) and Christine Green (Group 2 advisor). The Global White Lion Protection Trust generously hosted the event at their visitor camp in the White Lion heartlands (Tsau) located in the UNESCO Kruger-to-Canyons Biosphere. Key accomplishments and highlights include:
- A landmark international declaration that places the Rights of Nature and Indigenous consciousness at the centre of decisions regarding site protection.
- The formation of the ASSEGAIA Alliance to carry the declaration forward and to implement strategies for protecting sacred natural sites worldwide.
- Deeper understanding of the Indigenous perspective of sacred natural sites and greater clarity as to how One Ancient Future can ignite a global movement to protect them.
- Validation that a collaborative, heart-centred approach among diverse partners can engender creative, innovative solutions with global impact.
- The opportunity to witness White Lions roaming, playing, roaring, and resting in their ancestral homelands. One Ancient Future extends its gratitude to Linda Tucker, CEO of the White Lion Trust, and lion ecologist Jason Turner (2018 Holistic Visions Group 9 member) for sharing their hospitality and knowledge of sacred sites.
The Declaration will be formally presented at key international conferences in the coming months, including the Convention on Biological Diversity post (Nairobi); the UN Climate Summit (New York); The Climate COP (Santiago); IUCN World Conservation Congress (Marseille) and Convention on Biological Diversity COP (Kunming) 2020. In addition, plans are underway to present the document at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January 2020.
Heartly,
Rico
