NATURE PROJECTS

ASSEGAIA

The ASSEGAIA Alliance was founded for the preservation of natural sites and also drafted the Declaration for the Protection of Indigenous Sacred Sites.
This declaration is a landmark document in the history of natural landscape conservation. It was drafted at a week-long conference in South Africa in August 2018, by an international delegation of 24 scientists, conservationists, environmental advocates, spiritual guardians, human rights experts, indigenous leaders and global NGOs.
Over 50 organizations rallied behind the ASSEGAIA Declaration to advocate with one voice for these sites while providing concrete solutions for all stakeholders in these eco-spheres.

The Declaration

The document was launched by the ASSEGAIA Alliance on January 21, 2020 during the WEF World Economic Forum in Davos.
The declaration calls on governments, the United Nations, international organizations, local communities and private sector companies to adopt an ecocentric model for protecting natural landscapes. This includes a holistic approach that prioritizes the rights of nature and protects the indigenous communities that protect, conserve and restore these sites.
In support of the declaration, indigenous elders held simultaneous ceremonies at 12 sacred sites around the world.
